Brakes aren't something you want to neglect. The good news: your vehicle almost always warns you before a problem becomes dangerous. Here are the 7 most common signs to watch for.
1. A high-pitched squeal or whistle
Most pads have a small metal wear indicator that deliberately produces a high-pitched sound as they approach the wear limit. If you hear this while driving or braking lightly, this is the most common signal.
2. A deep metallic grinding or scraping sound
If the sound becomes deeper, rougher, almost like metal on metal — it often means the pad is completely worn and metal is touching the rotor directly. At this point, act quickly to avoid damaging the rotors.
3. A vibration in the pedal or steering wheel when braking
A vibration that shows up specifically when you brake can indicate warped or unevenly worn rotors, often linked to pads at the end of their life.
4. A stopping distance that feels longer
If you notice your vehicle takes "longer" to stop than before, even slightly, pay attention. This is one of the most serious signs not to ignore.
5. The brake warning light on your dashboard
On many newer vehicles, a wear sensor directly triggers a dashboard light. If it comes on, don't wait.
6. A soft brake pedal or one that sinks lower than usual
A pedal that goes deeper than before before it "bites" can indicate several things, including worn pads or low brake fluid. Either way, it's worth having checked.
7. Visible thickness under 3mm
If you look through your wheel spokes, a new pad is generally around 10-12mm thick. Under 3mm, it's time to change, regardless of other symptoms.
